Dear Savvy Business Person,
It was a pretty sad sight . . . or should I say "site."
The worst part is that I’ve seen it many times before.
I bet you have too.
I was at a trade show and met the most amazing web designer, Dan. He specialized in websites for high-end businesses and had an impressive resume. He had created sites for several businesses I knew well, including a luxury boutique and a prominent real estate firm.

I've seen it a thousand times, but I still couldn't believe it–from a web designer!
He called me a few days later to set up a meeting. I went because I just HAD to know why, with his genius, his own site was so amateurish.
When I met him at his office, the nice slacks and jacket he wore to the trade show were gone, replaced by faded jeans, a torn T-shirt, and flip-flops. He led me to a chair that had seen better days and sat down opposite me.
His website was up on his computer screen. He looked at me and said, "Oh yeah, I need to get that fixed one of these days. I've had that site since I started this company. My friend did it for me as a favor."
Huh?
Let me ask you–how would you perceive a business if you saw a website that looked like that? Then saw the business owner dressed in old jeans and flip-flops?
Would you do business with that person?
It got me wondering how many other companies have websites that haven't been updated in years or are not well designed.
And how many have owners and staff who aren't favorably representing the company during working hours and at events—simply by their appearance?
My hunch is, at least 70%.

That may sound blunt, but it's really that simple. And I'm talking about both your business and personal images—because, truthfully, as far as clients are concerned, they are one and the same.
Let's make sure we're on the same page first. What is "image"?
Image is your wardrobe, grooming, and nonverbal communication. Combined, these factors can make you stand out as competent, knowledgeable, elegant, gracious, powerful, or anything else you choose to communicate. Or not.
It's all about communication and connection.
Image is also what you show or give to clients: brochures, articles, flyers, in-person customer service, your office, your employees, your coworkers.
Your online image is your website: its design, graphics, audio, video, and testimonials. It's also your blog, emails and free reports you send and your online customer service.
Your online image isn’t something to be neglected. You have 3-5 seconds to connect with your website visitor before he or she clicks away.
Not much time…you have to make the most of it.
The connection your company has with your prospects is extra-important because you don't converse with them, so you have to connect virtually—through your website, your marketing message, your blog, Facebook or Twitter accounts, or through video and audio. Your prospects have to go by what they "see"…which is your image.
Most people don't understand the role that image plays in business, and even if they did, they wouldn't understand why. It's not something you learn in school or from business experts.
But it does play a huge role in who is successful and who isn't.
I think everybody has seen business owners or upper-management employees wearing jeans with holes and flip-flops, like Dan used to. Or sweats and T-shirts. Some of them have websites that were thrown up in haste with dead links or misspellings…or a brochure done by a "friend" who can't seem to run a copy machine.
As in the example above, when I visited Dan, my reaction was no different from a client's.

All in all, it makes a bad first impression (and second…and third…).
And it's one that is never forgotten.
